Curator / Writer

Charlotte Cotton is a writer and curator based in Los Angeles. She has served as a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Photographers’ Gallery, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Katonah Museum of Art, and the International Center of Photography in New York. Her notable works include "The Photograph as Contemporary Art" (2005), "Photography is Magic: The Future of Art Photography" (2015), and her latest publication "Public, Private, Secret: On Photography and the Configuration of Self, and Fashion Image Revolution" which was released in June 2018. Currently, she is a resident curator at the California Museum of Photography, Riverside.

Featured in the JAPAN PHOTO AWARD MAGAZINE

The awardees' works will be featured in the JAPAN PHOTO AWARD MAGAZINE. This magazine will be exhibited in art museums, bookstores, galleries both domestically and internationally, as well as in art book fairs.

Award Exhibition at KYOTOGRAPHIE KG+

The awardees will be granted the right to present their winning works for two months at HOTEL ANTEROOM KYOTO as a special exhibition during the Kyoto International Photography Festival KG+, scheduled to be held in Kyoto in April 2024."

*Travel expenses to Kyoto are not provided.

*Additionally, the printing and display methods for the exhibition will be at the discretion of the organizers.

ENTRY METHOD

There are no restrictions on the theme of the work, age, experience (professional, amateur), equipment, or editing methods.

This award has produced the most globally active artists in Japan.We encourage you to participate enthusiastically.

 

"1. Please fill out the necessary information and submit your work data through the entry form located at the bottom of the page, between December 5, 2023, and January 21, 2024. All judging will be conducted online."

* The entry fee is 6,000 yen for general participants and 4,000 yen for students (requires a copy of student ID and must be under 30 years old) per title (up to 10 images).

  • One set of up to 10 images is considered one title, and individuals may enter as many titles as they wish.

  • If entering multiple titles, please pay the total amount of the entry fees in one lump sum.

  • Payment can be made via bank transfer or credit card.

  • Previous works submitted to the JAPAN PHOTO AWARD or other contests, whether they have been entered or awarded, are also eligible.

  • Works shot with a smartphone or edited with applications like Photoshop are also accepted. We accept any expression as long as it is in JPEG data format."

 

2. After submitting your work, you will receive an automated email confirming your provisional entry. Please transfer the entry fee within 3 business days.

  • The transfer fee will be borne by the entrant.

  • If you enter on December 5, please transfer the entry fee by December 7.

  • The bank transfer details will be provided in the automated response email.

  • In the case of credit card payment (VISA, MASTER CARD, JCB, AMERICAN EXPRESS accepted), the payment method will also be described in the reply email.

  • Please note that once the payment is made, cancellations for any reason cannot be refunded."

 

3. Once your payment is confirmed, we will send you an email confirming the receipt of your payment. The receipt of this email signifies the completion of your entry.

  • If there are any issues with your data, we will contact you.

  • We will contact you within 5 business days after your payment is made.

4. We plan to announce the results of the judging on February 9, 2024.

"The submission period for Vol. 11 will be from December 5, 2023, to January 21, 2024."

Entry Regulations and Disclaimer

  • Please note that the details of the awards are subject to change without prior notice depending on the circumstances. No refunds will be provided in such cases.

  • A selection of the award-winning works will be featured in the photobook, and all entries will be published online.

  • If there are a large number of participants, a preliminary judging may be conducted. Please note that we cannot provide explanations for the selection process.

  • No refunds or other accommodations will be made if a judge withdraws for any reason, or if multiple judges select the same artist.

  • Award-winning works may be freely published on websites and in print materials, both domestically and internationally, for exhibition and PR purposes of this competition, with attribution to the artist and indication that it is an entry for this project.

  • All copyright for the submitted works remains with the entrant.

  • Entries must be original works.

  • If claims of copyright infringement or demands for damages are made by third parties, the entrant must address these issues at their own responsibility. The organizers will not be liable for any such claims.
